I have heard a lots and lots of stories in this industry! I see CNS candidates get fabulous jobs where there is good patient collaboration, learning and growth. I have seen many fabulous work scenarios, supporting weight loss programs, integrative medical clinics, homes for adults with disabilities, government agencies, and more.
And I have also seen some challenging work scenarios. My haunches go up when a CNS candidate or CNS has a bad experience at a new job. When I hear these stories, I ask folks, what are some interview red flags? Or employer red flags that clued you into a bad scenario?
There are some standard bad work scenarios such as…
Grueling expectations or schedule
Low pay
Lack of clear job expectations
Lack of ethics
Workplace harassment or abuse
But today I want to talk about some employment or internship red flags that are specific to this industry: integrative health, functional medicine, and the wellness industry.
Our industry is unique because there are many models of practice for practitioners and patients alike.
When you interview get into the nitty gritty. Remember that interviews are a two-way street. You are interviewing each other.
Some questions to consider exploring when interviewing for a nutrition job…
What is the program for clients/patients?
What is cost of services? Are they running 4 or 5 digit programs
Ask the owners what they love about running this business? Get to know their passion/vision.
Where does their revenue come from I.e. Labs, group programs, 1:1 clinical and supplements? Suss out folks that are highly sales oriented with high mark-ups
How much customization is there to supplement or lab protocols? Are clients being screened for appropriate interventions?
Who are your colleagues and collaborators? Are you being slotted alongside folks with little training?

One of the biggest red flags that can show up with collaboration conversation is the ever evolving, never solidified relationship with no contract. Avoid doing work without a solidified contract or job offer. Don’t don’t stop looking for jobs when an offer is never solidified.
You got into this field because you are passionate about helping people AND you want to collaborate with folks that are prioritizing people not just profit. Don’t get me wrong. Profit is important. We have to make money to make a career!! It is possible to do both - make a living AND help people with with safe and ethical practice.
